Data security is fast becoming one of the biggest IT challenges facing organizations large and
small. While organizations invest to protect the network perimeter from external attacks, one
area has until now been relatively neglected: The security of an organization’s backup, recovery
and archive processes. However, a series of new regulations and many high profile backup tape and
data loss stories are finally changing that. Organizations are being forced to re-evaluate how
they effectively secure their backup data. Eagle Cap Communications offers an affordable way of
addressing backup security in a comprehensive fashion, outlining the key building blocks of a
backup security implementation, and offering best practices guidance for your company’s data.
Data Center Facilities:
Our primary data storage equipment is located in a state of the art, tier 1 data center
that is housed in a federally secured building. Our replication servers are housed in an undisclosed, secure
tier 1 data center at a separate location. Both locations have the following features:
- Escorted access only
- Video Camera Surveillance
- Redundant power supplies
- Battery backup systems
- Surge suppression for all grid power connections
- Fire Suppression systems
- Anti-static tile floors
- Redundant cooling systems
- Alarming and monitoring for environmentals and unauthorized access
- Redundant fiber connections with diverse building entrances
Data Replication:
All computer data that is backed up to Eagle Cap's primary backup servers is automatically
replicated to another secure location. By doing this for our customers we can assure that if we
ever had a disaster in our own facilities that your data is still safe.
Security Software:
Hardware and software failures are common and can be costly. An
easy-to-use and cost-effective backup plan is the only solution. Eagle Cap’s online backup service utilizes
state of the art hardware and software. The backup software routinely copies versions of your important files
to a secure offsite data storage location. The data is securely wrapped in a 128-bit “Blowfish” encryption key
before it travels over your Internet connection. This prevents any chance of unauthorized access to your
private backup files and all your data is stored in our secure Network Operations Center in its fully
encrypted form.
128 Bit Encryption:
- 128 bit point to point SSL communication between server and client
- Choice of encryption algorithms, Twofish, Triple DES or Advance Encryption Standard (AES)
- Choice of encryption modes, Electronic Cook Book (ECB) or Cipher Block Chaining (CBC)
- User defined access restrictions by IP address

All communications between our Backup Server and your computer
is transported in a 128-bit SSL (Secure Socket Layer) channel. Although all your backup files
travel through a public network (internet), eavesdroppers have no knowledge of what has been
exchanged.
All of your files are first encrypted and zipped with
your defined encrypting key before they are sent to Eagle Cap’s backup server. To all people but
you, your files stored on Eagle Cap’s backup server are no more than some garbage files with
random content.
The encryption key used to encrypt your files resides only on your computer and is known only to
you. It is never transmitted anywhere across the network. If this key is lost, all backup files
can never be recovered. Therefore, although we have access to all files you stored on our backup
server, we have no knowledge of the content of the files you stored. Reminder: Please make sure
you write down your encryption key and store it in a safe place.
